I’ve finally finished my second sewing bee buffet dress and I’m so happy. This dress is everything I hoped it would be, comfortable to wear and looks good too. The flow of the gathers makes it flattering when seated and the billowing sleeves also add interest.
The fabric that I purchased from Minerva was an absolute joy to work with. I know from past experience that Rayon Challis can be a bit tricky to work with but not the case with this one, it behaved perfectly and didn’t slip at all.
I knew that the neckline would be too low for me (something us wheelies have to be conscious off being sat with people looking at us from above) but a simple vest top underneath solved this problem.
Overall I really enjoyed making this dress. There was a reasonable amount of hand sewing which I stupidly didn’t realise which made it far more challenging, and I have to admit that a few tears were shed along the way. Having MS makes my fingers numb so griping a needle and trying to stitch is really hard for me and causes fatigue both physically and mentally, not to mention lots of dropped and unthreaded needles. The solution – I just took it slow and did a few stitches at a time and then had a break, I got there eventually. It was a real test of my patience, (and my poor husband’s having to keep helping me.)
I know I’m going to get a lot of wear out of this dress both now with boots and also with sandals in the summer.
I sometimes think the harder I’ve found something to achieve the more I actually appreciate the finished article.
Sewing can be challenging and frustrate me when I feel I can’t do it as well as I used too but nothing beats that feeling of accomplishment when I finally finish a project.
