After the slow sew of my previous project (the Carolyn PJ’s), this top was completely the opposite, it came together in no time and was very easy to make.
I absolutely love the autumnal colours of the gorgeous Ponte Roma fabric that was very kindly gifted to me by Minerva as part of their Ambassador program.
Ponte is a lovely fabric to work with as it’s so incredibly well behaved and then is equally great to wear as it doesn’t crease and always launders well. This particular Ponte is a medium weight with a good drape and a slightly soft sheen which makes it look very luxurious.
I chose McCalls pattern 6963 and opted for view A which is sleeveless, as I envisaged wearing it in Autumn and winter layered under a cardigan or blazer.
The day we came to take my photos, was a lovely bright sunny one and I realised it would also be great in spring/summer on its own, so I’m very pleased I decided to ditch the sleeves and now have a very versatile top that can be worn all year round.
I had to make my usual full bust adjustment to the pattern and grade out the side seams to accommodate my tummy. (As this is a Palmer Pletsch pattern it has very detailed instructions on how to make changes to the fit if you are unsure how to do this). It is a good length and so won’t leave me with a chilled back which is often a concern sat in the wheelchair and it’s a nice fit around the bust so isn’t revealing when viewed from above which again can be an issue when you’re seated and other people aren’t.
Hubby very kindly cut out my top using a rotary cutter and fabric weights which we find is the best way to deal with knit fabrics.
I used a jersey needle in my sewing machine for the small amounts of regular sewing but predominantly used my overlocker for the side seams and my cover stitch for the hem. Ponte doesn’t fray but I prefer the look of a finished hem. You could easily sew this top fully on a regular sewing machine using a stretch or zig zag stitch.
I’m very happy with the finished result and will definitely be using this pattern again.
