This lovely weather that we’ve been experiencing made me feel that summer was definitely on its way, so my next project came at just the right time to take advantage of the sunshine. It’s not a glamorous make but enormously practical. I’ve been meaning to add a white t-shirt to my wardrobe for ages. I like this one because it’s a little bit different to the norm with it’s dropped shoulders and feature neckline.
This is the Tabor top from Sew House Seven. There are numerous versions included with the pattern but on this occasion I chose to make view 2 which is a t-shirt with a lapped V neck, rounded hems and banded sleeves that fold up.
The instructions are really clear and the lapped neck was surprisingly simple to achieve.
The fabric was gifted to me by Minerva as part of their Ambassador program. I made sure that I laundered it first to avoid any shrinking. It’s a John Kaldor light viscose jersey and it’s incredibly soft and very good quality. About my only criticism of it, (and it is a small one), is that it is a little bit too light and transparent for my liking which is my own fault for choosing ivory, I’m sure a darker colour wouldn’t have been so transparent.
As usual, hubby kindly cut out my project for me using weights and a rotary cutter. This works well on jersey and is our preferred method of cutting out.
For a thin jersey it’s very easy to work with, it didn’t roll excessively at the edges and held a press really well. I did use a pressing cloth to avoid shine though.
I used knit interfacing to strengthen the point of the v-neck and support the shoulder seams as recommended in the pattern. I predominantly used my overlocker for constructing this project, but on areas requiring the normal machine I used a stretch needle. You could easily construct this top just using a normal sewing machine with a stretch or zig zag stitch if you haven’t got an overlocker. I chose to finish the hem using my cover stitch machine but you could use a twin needle in an ordinary sewing machine or indeed just leave the hem unfinished as jersey doesn’t fray.
I have to admit I love this pattern and can’t wait to make more t-shirts with it, I’m also going to try view 4 which is the jumper version.
