After having enjoyed making the Tabor T-Shirt I then wanted to make the jumper version (version 4). I chose a gorgeous jersey knit fabric with a cable design from Minerva. I now wish I’d bought more in different colours, (there are at least four other that I have my eye on so I’d better start saving my pennies!) To say I love this fabric is an understatement. It’s incredibly soft and the pattern is so effective, it could easily be mistaken for a hand knitted fabric from a distance.
You would think having made the t-shirt that it would be plain sailing making the jumper, well it wasn’t. I have made mistakes (MS brain strikes again). I was so focused on pattern matching on the side seam that I forget about the shoulder seams. Still I don’t think I’ve ruined it, it’s still a very wearable top. If I’m being really picky I would also line up the point of the centre V with one of the rows of cable stitches but these are just annoying niggles that I’m probably the only one to take any notice of. Besides I’ve seen numerous rtw items on the rails that don’t pattern match, but I just think it lets it down, next time I make this top I’ll pay more attention to these details.
It is a good weight jumper and very cosy to wear. Despite its thickness this didn’t cause me any difficulties sewing it. I had anticipated having issues trying to form the v-neck, but it held its press well and glided under the feet of all my machines.
Once again the sewing instructions provided by Sew House Seven were very clear and easy to follow. Construction was similar to the t-shirt so have a read through my previous review if you want to know more about that. The main difference sewing wise is that the split level hem on the jumper has side vents which have neat mitred corners which is a really lovely detail. They were far easier to construct than you would at first imagine. Also because of the vents, cover stitching the hem was a little more challenging as it involved a lot of twin needle pivoting, but it was worth the extra effort and I’m happy with the results.
I would highly recommend both this pattern and the fabric and will definitely be using them again in the future. I know this jumper is going to get lots of wear.
