For some time, I have been on a quest to improve my trouser fitting skills with the final goal being a pair of wheelchair friendly jeans. To this end, I decided to tackle a pair of summer culottes.
For my pattern I chose the Calder pants from Cashmerette which are wide-legged woven trouser that feature a flat front, elasticated back waistband, faced in-seam pockets, and come with three length options: mid-calf, full, and shorts. I chose the mid-calf.
To adapt the trousers to make them more comfortable for my seated wheelchair position I raised the back waistband and added more room at the front seam to accommodate my tummy. The pattern comes with two fitting options, pear and apple, so with my apple fit option I didn’t have to alter the rise (which was a pleasant surprise).
I wouldn’t normally pick a wide leg trouser as they can get caught in my wheels but this mid calf option is perfect.
The fabric, (which was kindly gifted to me by Minerva as part of their Ambassador program) was an absolutely beautiful polycotton chambray with a good drape in a mid blue colour. It was so lovely to work with, washed well and kept its press. It would be ideal for a shirt or sundress and lovely and cool for summer.
The pattern in true Cashmerette style is easy to follow and make. The only issue I had was the back elasticated waist. As the waistband is in one long piece and the elastic is quite wide it was very difficult for my hands to stretch the elastic to the required tension whilst sewing. I had to admit defeat and get hubby to assist. This was his first time ever sewing and I think despite his initial trepidation he actually enjoyed it. Of course if you don’t have MS or a problem with your grip this pattern would be a breeze, it’s just something I’d never previously considered but something I’m going to have to be more aware of with my future projects.
I’m really happy with the finished trousers, they are very comfortable and I know I’m going to get a lot of wear out of them. I especially love the deep pockets and I’m pretty chuffed with how they’ve turned out.
I have had real difficulty trying to photograph the trousers for you, unfortunately being seated you can’t properly see the shape of the wide legs and you can’t really see any of the detailing so I’ve taken some shots of them on the hanger as well.
