Saybrook Tank

There are times when simple projects take you by surprise and you wonder how you ever managed without them. This is one such project.

I have never really liked wearing tank tops…..that is up until now. This is the Saybrook Tank from Cashmerette Patterns. It is designed to be comfortable for larger ladies and is cut to ensure that no bra strap will ever be on show. Total genius!

There are several versions included in the pattern, a high scoop neck tank with a high back and a stylish knotted hem, a low scoop neck cami with a low back and straight hem, or a cropped tank. I chose to make the high neck version (more wheelchair friendly as most people view you from above) but went for a longer back and a straight hem.

Cashmerette patterns come in a good range of cup sizes but after tissue fitting I felt I still needed a FBA. I still think it is very snug around the bust for my liking but hubby informs me that this is how vest tops should be so I’ll leave it for now. As this top is designed for stretch fabric I imagine most people wouldn’t need to do an FBA and would be able to just use the pattern and possibly grade between sizes.

Minerva very kindly supplied me with this pattern as part of their #TopIdolchallenge and I used a fabric that I have had in my stash for ages. It is quite a lightweight ombré effect jersey that I purchased from Birmingham Rag Market a good number of years ago.

I sewed the seams using my overlocker and attached the binding using my normal sewing machine with a zig zag stitch using a jersey needle. I finished off the binding and hems using my cover stitch machine.

It all came together so quickly and easily I’ll definitely be making more. Maybe on one of my future makes I’ll try attaching the binding on my cover stitch as well, but for this one I wanted to follow the pattern instructions.

This is going to become a favourite pattern as a tank top is really versatile and perfect for layering in our ever changing weather. It has proved invaluable today in our 30 degree heatwave.

Please excuse the wrinkles in the photos, I’ve been wearing this top all day before the photos were taken.
