After the complexity of my last few makes it was lovely to have a quick and easy project. This time I used a Thread Count pattern TC2108 which came free with Love Sewing magazine. I chose to make the shorter version instead of the longer tiered option as I felt that despite being beautiful it would have been too full a skirt and caused problems getting caught in my wheels.
My fabric was the gorgeous Feline Flecks from Minerva’s new exclusive viscose challis range. This was very kindly gifted to me as part of their ambassador program.
Having already tried another of their fabrics from this range I already knew how wonderful this fabric is to work with and this one didn’t disappoint. It really is the softest fabric, with super drape and good opacity. Being 150cm wide is a big bonus too.
I love the Leopards and Tigers in the design and the flashes of rust and gold make this a super fabric for autumn. Paired with tights and a cardigan this dress will see me through many a chilly day right into winter.
I started by washing and drying my fabric as I knew it would likely shrink a little and then hubby cut it out for me using a rotary cutter. I used a microtex needle and my walking foot to ensure that there weren’t any slipped stitches from the fabric moving.
This was such a quick dress to sew. There are basically three pattern pieces, front back and the sleeves. With elasticated sleeve cuffs and waist. It’s a very relaxed style so easy to fit and just as easy to sew. It’s a perfect beginner pattern, the only part that can be a little tricky is threading the elastic through (but that is probably because I have numb fingers and so it might be easier for someone who can feel the fabric).
The pattern suggests purchasing bias binding to make the casing for the waist elastic but I had enough fabric to be able to make my own so thought it would be nice if it matched the dress. I know no one else will see it but it’s little details like this that make home made garments special.
It’s such a comfy dress to wear, I know I’ll certainly be using this pattern again. I may also hack it in the future to use as a bubble top blouse.
If you haven’t tried the new Minerva range yet I suggest you do as the fabric really is beautiful and there are some truly gorgeous designs.
