I finally get to share with you my summer dress, which has been made for a couple of weeks now. I’ve been waiting for some sunshine to be able to show it off to its best advantage, it just didn’t seem right photographing it on a dull miserable day.
I used a gorgeous cotton sateen fabric from Minerva’s exclusive collection called Femme Fatale its dreamy colours and pattern reminds me of brushstrokes from a Monet painting. This is my first time working with cotton sateen and I have to say that it is an absolute gem of a fabric to work with. It’s very easy to sew and holds a press beautifully, it’s also really lovely to wear as it’s soft and breathable, perfect for a hot summers day (whenever we get one of those again!)
When I was initially choosing my pattern, we were in the middle of a really hot spell, so I chose M7116 as it felt like the perfect summer dress pattern but honestly as soon as I started to make the dress, it seems to have been grey and dull and rained every single day since. We even had flood warnings in force!
At first I was torn between the 4 options available with the pattern as I liked them all, but I eventually decided that option B would be the most suitable for my figure and comfort in the wheelchair.
As usual I tissue fitted the pattern first, and realised that due to my waist measurement, I wouldn’t need to use elastic under the bust to gather in the dress, if I did this, it just emphasised my tummy, and the dress is very comfortable without it. I also found that I didn’t need to use a zipper (which is definitely a bonus). I really like the elastic gathers around the neck line as together with the raglan sleeve, this creates a lovely shape, that doesn’t gape and isn’t too low.
It is such an easy dress to wear and with no fixings it’s perfect for days when my fingers are numb (due to my MS) as I can just slip it on over my head and i’m good to go.
Hubby cut the pattern out for me using a rotary cutter and I used a fine universal needle to sew up the project. I also used my overlocker to finish the seams.
It was a quick project to sew and a very satisfying make as the fabric just made me smile every time I looked at it.
