It’s a Velvet Crush

I’m so happy to finally be able to share this make with you. This gorgeous fabric is launching today at the special Pop-up shop event in Manchester to mark Minerva’s 25th Birthday. It’s called Midsummer Magic and it’s part of the new Exclusive Crush Velvet Stretch Knit Fabric range.

I have admired this as a viscose challis but It’s such a vibrant print it looks wonderful as a crush velvet. I was very lucky to have been gifted this as part of their Ambassador programme and to receive it prior to the launch.

I chose to pair the fabric with Cashmerette’s Appleton dress, which is a wrap dress designed for a light to medium weight knit fabric with at least 50% crosswise stretch.

Now normally being a wheelchair user I wouldn’t dare opt for such a low cut v neck dress, especially not a wrap one! (Being viewed from above by most people means having to be careful with necklines). But this one is very clever. Thanks to the neckbands continuing on to form the ties for the waistband the wraps are held snuggly together without any gaping – total genius!

This is my first foray into the world of crush velvet and I have to say it was a lot easier to work with than I had first imagined.

The pattern recommends cutting out in a single layer of fabric and this is definitely important for the velvet as it does have a tendency to want to move about. As usual hubby kindly cut everything out for me using a rotary cutter.

The dress comes together really quickly, I sewed it predominantly on my overlocker with the hems being done on my cover stitch machine. There are comprehensive instructions for sewing on both a normal sewing machine or an overlocker. If you are using a normal machine and sewing with velvet, then I would highly recommend using a walking foot just to help the fabric from slipping too much.

You also have to be careful using the Iron with velvet as you don’t want to ruin the lovely pile, but I found using a ironing cloth and a ham made it a lot easier.

The fabric and pattern are equally wonderful and I would highly recommended both.

(Image Description: there are six images taken from different angles showing Yvonne seated in her wheelchair in her garden. Yvonne has brown/grey shoulder length hair and is wearing a v-neck crushed velvet wrap dress and sandals. The fabric has a dark purple background with an exotic floral pattern in shades of pink, yellow, red and orange).
