I’ve been dodging the rain showers and finally managed to grab 10 minutes of dryness to take photos of my latest make.
I’m sure it needs no introduction, this is the iconic Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. Vogue have re-released this 70’s vintage pattern as V2000 to mark their 50th anniversary. It’s such a timeless and elegant dress.
The pattern which I was kindly gifted by Simplicity McCalls comes with two variations; a midi or a maxi and can be sewn with both woven or knit fabrics.
I chose to make the midi version because the maxi would be too long for me and catch in my wheels. I used the gorgeous Rosette Rhythm from Minerva’s exclusive viscose challis range which was my choice from their Ambassador fabrics. The colours in this fabric are so bright and cheerful, they definitely helped brighten up these dull days we’ve been having.
I love Minerva’s exclusive viscose challis range because it’s always so good to work with and the fabric is lovely and soft and just feels beautiful to wear.
The instructions on the pattern are clear but there are numerous sew alongs available online now to guide you.
As usual I started by washing and drying my fabric and then after tissue fitting using my seated dress form I made my pattern adjustments. Hubby then kindly cut out my fabric for me using a rotary cutter. I used a microtex 80 needle and finished my edges with the overlocker.
My only word of warning (and it’s probably me just being clumsy) is if you use a wheelchair watch out for the waist ties as they are very long!! (I managed on several occasions to run them over (and even get them caught up in the casters of my sewing chair).🤦🏻♀️
This dress is very comfy to wear and I don’t feel like there is any chance of it opening on the wrap skirt. I’m still undecided whether I’m comfortable not wearing a cami underneath it (us wheelchair uses have to be careful being viewed from a different angle).
I love how cheerful this dress is and it’s very easy to get on and off which is another important consideration for me.
Here are the general adjustments I made to the pattern to fit my figure
1) Full bust .
2) Full tummy.
3) Lower bust darts
4) Lengthened waist tie to accommodate my tummy
The wheelchair specific adjustment
1) Raised the neckline
2) Shortened length
Image description (there are six images taken from different angles showing Yvonne sat in her wheelchair in her garden wearing a multicoloured V-neckwrap dress).
