Finally, A top for my Bestie

I am incredibly lucky to have a very wonderful best friend who is so supportive of my sewing endeavours (and of everything I do in general). I always tend to make things for myself so I thought it was high time I actually made something for her.

She had recently admired a fabric in my stash, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to put a plan into action.

My friend (like me) also has MS and so spends a lot of time sitting down. She has a favourite top that she wears all the time as it’s really comfortable and practical for her and so we decided to try to clone it. The top has really unusual side seams that come forward into splits and she likes this because it is comfortable to sit in but also because this makes the fabric lie neatly in her lap. The length is also good for her when she’s standing and the fit gives her plenty of room for unrestricted movement with her crutches.

She also likes the loose fit as she likes to wear vest tops underneath.

We decided to not add cuffs to the sleeves and bottom hem but to just finish them with a coverstitch. We also chose to let the hem sit quiet low on the wrist for extra warmth when holding crutches.

To clone the top I simply traced over the seams of the existing top using Swedish tracing paper and then added seam allowances. It was a surprisingly easy thing to do. Apart from the hems I sewed the entire top on the overlocker so it came together really quickly.

I’m so happy with how the top has turned out, it really does look lovely in the fabric.

I always get nervous making things for others in case they don’t turn out the way I wanted or they don’t like them but hopefully this top will be ok and she’ll enjoy wearing it. It felt so good to finally make something for her as she’s such a wonderful person.

The last photo is the original top that we cloned, the others are the new one.

Image Description

There are five photos taken from different angles showing a woman wearing a green patterned top and one showing the same woman in a plain green top that the other was cloned from.
