Love Notions – La Bella Donna

My latest make couldn’t have come at a better time! Having endured storm Darragh and definitely feeling the winter chill in the air, I was very much in need of a snuggly jumper to keep warm in.

My fabric (kindly gifted by Minerva as part of their ambassador scheme) is called falling blossom and it’s from Minerva’s Exclusive Sweater Knit range. I love working with this base cloth, it’s soft, has lovely drape and it behaves very well during cutting and sewing. I’ve used it before and know from experience that it’s comfy to wear and washes brilliantly every time.

The Falling Blossom print is pretty, on a gorgeous blue background with white, pink and black flowers. Being a sweater knit it is slightly more subdued and less vibrant than on some of the other base cloths, but I think this just adds to it’s wintry appeal.

I was initially torn between two patterns, Style Arc’s Tabor Top and Love Notions La Bella Donna. After asking for advice online, I finally chose La Bella Donna and opted for the shirt option with the cowl neck. This was such an easy and enjoyable top to sew, I know I will be making more of them in the future.

I didn’t make any pattern adjustments as such, I just graded between sizes to accommodate my full bust and tummy, this gave me the close fit over the arms and shoulders that I was looking for, with more room around the middle for comfort.

Having pre-washed my fabric, hubby very kindly cut out the pattern for me using a rotary cutter. I used my overlocker for all of the construction work and then finished the hem with my cover-stitch machine, so it came together in super quick time.

You could however, definitely construct this top using a normal sewing machine fitted with a ball-point or jersey needle and using a zig-zag stitch or Maraflex thread.

I’m super happy with how the top has turned out and know that this will definitely become a favourite in my wardrobe.

Wheelchair Considerations

1) The length of this top (shirt option) is perfect for my chair as it finishes in my lap and so doesn’t have excess fabric underneath me.

2) The sleeves are close fitting and so would not get caught in the wheels of a manual chair

3) There are no fastenings with this top so it’s easy to just pull off and on.

4) The sweater knit is stretchy and soft and so very easy and comfortable to wear.
