Minerva Tracey Jacket

Who doesn’t love a shirt style jacket? So practical that every wardrobe needs one – fabulous as an outerwear topper or as a layering piece. Minerva’s latest exclusive pattern the Tracey jacket is no ordinary Shacket though, it’s rich in details and finished off with just the right amount of top stitching to elevate it into something special. You can tell that so much thought has gone into creating this pattern from the design of the patch pockets through to the fishtail hem, attention to detail is everywhere.

I was in the midst of autumn when I first saw this pattern and was craving warm layers so chose the beautiful Falling Blossom from Minerva’s Exclusive Brushed Cotton Flannel Fabric collection.

I’ve never sewn with brush cotton flannel before and it was a really enjoyable experience as it’s such a well behaved fabric to work with. It’s also incredibly cozy to wear being so soft and warm.

The pattern is aimed at intermediate or confident beginner sewists and with the very comprehensive instructions (and follow along video) I think it’s definitely possible for a beginner to achieve an incredible jacket that they want to wear all the time. I thoroughly enjoyed making mine.

I opted to use snap fasteners because they look good with the style of jacket and are also much easier for me to do up than buttons. (If you have weak or arthritic hands though you may need assistance in applying them to the fabric initially). I didn’t make any adjustments to the fitting as it’s designed to be a generous boxy fit.

I can’t tell you how happy I am with how the jacket has turned out, I have worn it so many times since I made it.

Wheelchair considerations

The length of the jacket is great because the lower back hem covers your back and fits neatly underneath you without bunching up. You could always shorten the back to finish at your seat if you don’t like sitting on fabric.

Being able to use snap fasteners makes the shirt easy to close.

The front pockets are roomy and (due to their placement) easily accessed whilst seated.
