The Pippa Top Kit

I love Minerva’s kits, they just make sewing a total joy, I was so happy and privileged to be able to test the new Pippa Top Kit. Everything you need is right there ready for you, so you can just sit down and start on your project knowing that every little part is taken care of.

This is the second time that I have made the Pippa Top, first time using the kit though, and it definitely makes life easier.

Last time, I used a very colourful recycled brushed ITY stretch knit fabric. This time I have gone for a teal Cotton Lycra Jersey.

This particular jersey stands out as one of my favourites. It has a wonderful quality feel and is incredibly buttery soft. At 220 GSM, it’s the perfect weight – not too heavy but still substantial. It behaves beautifully while being sewn and doesn’t curl at the edges like many jerseys do.

Being 95% cotton, it’s very breathable, (which is important for me as I’m very temperature sensitive having MS). The 5% elastane provides a 50% stretch along both the width and length, making it incredibly comfortable to wear.

I usually sew jersey with my overlocker and cover stitch machine, but for this kit, I decided to use my normal sewing machine (with the ballpoint needle provided) and a zigzag stitch of 0.5mm width and 2.5mm length. This resulted in neat seams whilst providing the perfect amount of stretch.

I’ll definitely be using this fabric again and the variety of colours available means I’m spoilt for choice.

The thing I love the most about the Pippa top is its versatility. It’s little design details make it perfect for every day wear but also suitable for slightly dressy occasions. It has a lovely V-neck (which isn’t too low for the wheelchair), gentle gathers at the sleeve head and an empire waistline with a ruffled hem. The addition of a little poof at the sleeve head helps to emphasise the gathers and create an interesting silhouette.

Although the top does have a buttoned bodice, it can easily be pulled on and off over your head which is great for me as I struggle with fastening buttons.

It’s such a pretty feminine design and it’s super comfortable to wear.

As usual with Minerva patterns, it is well written and easy to follow and there is also a video instruction to follow if you want too. It’s definitely a pattern that a confident beginner could easily tackle.
