I’m so pleased to be making another Tammy Dress, having made one before, I already knew just how much I love this pattern, and when Minerva kindly gifted me this beautiful Elephant Grove Broderie Anglaise fabric, I immediately knew that Tammy would be the perfect pattern for it.
There’s something about the Tammy that makes it such an enjoyable dress to sew and wear. I love the relaxed shape, the lovely gathered tiers, and, most of all, how easy it is to put on and off because it has no fastenings. It’s one of those patterns that you can make in completely different fabrics and end up with a totally different look. My previous Tammy was in a double gauze fabric, so it was a lot softer; the crispness of the Broderie gives the dress more structure, whilst still being soft to wear.
The Elephant Grove Broderie Anglaise is absolutely beautiful. The embroidered design is so pretty, and I love the texture created by the Broderie Anglaise. It has that lovely fresh, summery feel that made me imagine that I was on holiday already.
Because the fabric has the little cut-out holes throughout, I decided to face the bodice pieces and the first tier of the skirt with cotton fabric from my stash. This gives me a little more coverage where I need it, but still lets the beautiful Broderie Anglaise retain its lightness.
I really like the way this has worked. It doesn’t take away from the pretty fabric at all, and, if anything, I think the extra layer gives those areas of the dress a lovely depth. It also means I can wear the dress with confidence without having to worry about what might be showing through the Broderie Anglaise.
Before I started this dress, I had an image in my head of how I wanted it to look. I added lace trims, which I was able to also use just on the edges, for the sleeves and the hem, and I was delighted with the end result.
As I’d already made a Tammy once before, I knew what to expect from the pattern, and it was lovely to sew it again. I think this is definitely going to be a pattern that I keep returning too. I love that it’s so comfortable to wear with it’s relaxed shape and that it’s so easy to style in different ways.
And speaking of styling, I absolutely love it with my denim jacket! The inky tone of the blue in the fabric matches the colour of my denim perfectly.
The jacket completely changes the feel of the dress. Without it, the Broderie Anglaise makes the Tammy feel very pretty and feminine, but adding denim gives it a more casual, everyday look. It’s exactly the sort of outfit I love because I can just throw on the jacket and instantly feel dressed without looking too “done”.
I know it’s late now for wearing a summer dress, but it’s definitely going to be perfect for my holiday. Hopefully, with the addition of my jacket, I might get to wear it a couple more times this year at home.
I’m so happy with how this Tammy has turned out. I already knew I loved the pattern, but I think the Elephant Grove Broderie Anglaise has given it a completely different personality. It’s such a beautiful fabric and, for me, it really was the perfect match for Tammy.
I’m definitely not ruling out making another one… after all, you can never have too many Tammy Dresses!
Wheelchair Considerations.
The fit of the dress is nice and roomy, so there are no tight areas around the tummy.
B. The sleeves are a good length, not to get caught in your wheels if you are self-propelling or to catch on the joystick of an electric chair.
C. Although the skirt is tiered, there isn’t too much fabric, so it is comfortable to sit on.
D. The neckline is high enough and not revealing when viewed from above.
E. The length is great for giving a summer dress feel, without getting caught in your wheels
F. No fastenings make the dress easy to get on and off.
